My name is Megan and I am so glad you are here.
As a student affairs professional for 15 years, I have navigated both the decision to leave the field and the next steps to life post-student affairs.
I am a mother of 2 young boys and the wife of a hard-working partner. Like many of you, this work was my passion for many years, until it wasn’t. That was a hurtful realization, until I understood that it was OK to make a different decision. It was more than OK, it was the right time for me to get back in the driver’s seat of my life and intentionally take control of what came next.
At the time, it felt like the career I had poured my heart and soul into was rewarding me with pain, suffering, and sickness.
I chose to view it this way. I could not see any other way to view it. This was my truth.
Yes, it is true that the right move for me was to leave the field. But it is NOT true that it was all someone else’s fault.
Damn.
Since then, I have realized that these contributing factors were only part of the story. Our environment and those around us certainly play a big role in how we feel and the actions we take. But what makes a greater impact is us, as individuals. At the center of our lives is simply us.
Looking back, I realize that I played a significant role in my life but had chosen
not to exert any agency or choice in what was happening “to me” and continually made choices that did not serve me.
Each and every day we have a choice. I decided to make one. It was an important one, to be sure. Turns out, it was not the most important one. The work I have engaged in since my departure has lead me to a place of
self-discovery, of understanding what really makes me tick, what my lines in
the sand truly are, and to a place of taking responsibility for my actions,
reactions, thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It has been a wild ride. And it
is only just beginning.
